Last year, Helicon was presented with the Innovation in Publishing Award at The British Book Awards 1996 (the 'Nibbies'). These were the eighth British Book Awards, held at the London Hilton on Park Lane on Thursday 6 February 1997 and attended by 780 guests.
This award is presented to a publisher who has created outstandingly successful products through the exploitation of new technology, whether in CD-ROM, on-line, or through use of digital print technology. Other companies on the shortlist for this award were Dorling Kindersley, OUP Electronic Publishing, Notting Hill, and Chadwyck-Healey.
Helicon is an independent reference publishing company based in Oxford. Pioneers in electronic and multimedia publishing they were the first British company to publish a multimedia encyclopedia their commitment to the electronic age was confirmed in 1996 by an investment in the company by Microsoft. CD-ROM titles include the Hutchinson Multimedia Encyclopedia 1997, the Penguin Hutchinson Reference Library, the Hutchinson Science Library, and the Hutchinson Encyclopedia of Music. Helicon also publishes on-line through CompuServe, AOL, and other providers.
