In a deal that underlines Helicon's commitment to provide content for US libraries and schools, Helicon has signed an agreement with SIRS Inc. to provide content for their SIRS Renaissance® CD-ROM and online databases. The titles include material from the Hutchinson Dictionary of the Arts, the Hutchinson Dictionary of Ideas, the Hutchinson Encyclopedia of Music, and the Hutchinson Dictionary of Symbols in Art.
Commented Paula Jackson, VP, Operations, for SIRS:
Renaissance's diverse information on the arts and humanities will be enhanced and broadened further by Helicon's extensive content. SIRS Research staff will link each of the nearly 20,000 text segments to Library of Congress subject headings and also to relevant articles in the database. Secondly, the terms will be searchable by keyword and from within Renaissance's Glossary of the Arts.
Michael Upshall, Helicon Business Development Director, commented

First, it cements a relationship formed at ALA 1997 where Helicon was impressed not only with the range of content provided by SIRS for libraries, but by the glowing comments provided by librarians using the SIRS databases. Secondly, this word-of-mouth endorsement was underlined in Booklist dated 1 May 1998, in a review of field-tested reference sites (from librarians): 'Another surprise was that, though there are a number of electronic titles on the list [of most frequently used reference works in public libraries], only one, SIRS Researcher, was mentioned with the same frequency as standard print resources...'
