What follows is an extract from the British Telecom press release.
From today, pupils, parents, and teachers can benefit from the first online UK-produced encyclopedia. A joint development from BT and Helicon Publishing Group plc, Hutchinson Online Encyclopedia is being launched after six months of extensive trialling and comprises more than 5 million words, 42,000 articles, thousands of photos, videos, diagrams, maps, animations, quotations, bibliographies, and Web links that illustrate and enhance the UK-produced text.
Chris Hart, Head of Business Development at BT Education and Training, said:
This is a very exciting project, combining the very best of publishing and the Internet. Helicon's printed encyclopedia is the leading British encyclopedia and is the favoured encyclopedia of teachers. Moreover, BT brings a wealth of experience in making educational content available via the Internet.
Helicon's Managing Director, David Attwooll, conmmented:
Helicon has been a pioneer in electronic reference publishing throughout its six-year history, so it is appropriate that we are the first publisher selected by BT to work on a project such as this. What makes our Online Encyclopedia different from others on the market is its UK roots. Our extensive schools testing programme ensures we are responsive to UK users' needs and we believe this makes it unique.
