Helicon goes live on ntl

News archive

The Hutchinson Educational Encyclopedia, the first encyclopedia to be directly relevant to the National Curriculum, will soon become the world's first digital TV encyclopedia, thanks to a new content deal with ntl's groundbreaking interactive Knowledge Channel.

Michael Holyoke, Online Development Director at Helicon, says:

The medium of interactive television takes our product to a higher and more consumer-friendly level. By offering our National Curriculum-based encyclopedia via the ntl interactive channel, we are succeeding in making learning exciting, appealing, and enjoyable to kids... and at no extra cost to parents.

Helicon Publishing was formed through a management buyout of the Hutchinson Reference division of Random House, and is now part of the WHSmith Group. Other Helicon titles range from the acclaimed Hutchinson Almanac and the major four-volume Hutchinson Chronology of World History to the paperback Hutchinson GCSE Quiz Book.

Viewers of ntl's interactive education service, the Knowledge Channel, will have access to over 52,000 articles, 3,000 photographs, and some 470 maps via The Hutchinson Educational Encyclopedia. The unique structure of the content also ensures that it covers all critical knowledge required by school children in the run-up to their all-important GCSEs, and includes many links to articles which have been specially written to answer questions about specific topics which arise in the curriculum. Directly tested in UK school classrooms and fully checked by teachers, educational advisers, and experts, all entries are written in clear, jargon-free language, making it ideal for students from the age of 12 and upwards.

Michele Seisun, channel manager of ntl's interactive Knowledge Channel, comments:

The The Hutchinson Educational Encyclopedia complements our existing educational content perfectly. As well as fulfilling the need for a family-oriented encyclopedic reference resource on the channel, and being of particular use to school-aged children, it will also, because of its wide-ranging content, prove relevant to viewers across the board who will delight in using their television sets for infotainment as well as entertainment purposes. Who knows – it could help all our viewers sitting at home screaming out answers for Who Wants to be a Millionaire!
