Andersen, Hans Christian

Danish writer Hans Christian Andersen whose tales earned him international acclaim. An innovator in his method of storytelling, Andersen sometimes reveals a deep pessimism beneath the charm and childlike wonder of his stories. He also wrote novels, plays, and travel books.

Verdi Aïda

A performance of Verdi's popular dramatic opera Aïda at the Kirov Theatre, St Petersburg. The opera was written in 1871 to commemorate the opening of the Suez canal, and was first performed in Cairo.
