compiler

The process of compilation; a program written in a high-level language is translated into a program that can be run without the original source being present.

e-mail system

The basic structure of an e-mail system. A message is sent via a telephone line and stored in a central computer. The message remains there until the recipient calls up the central computer and collects the message.

liquid-crystal display

A liquid-crystal display consists of a liquid crystal sandwiched between polarizing filters similar to polaroid sunglasses. When a segment of the seven-segment display is electrified, the liquid crystal twists the polarized light from the front filter, allowing the light to bounce off the rear reflector and illuminate the segment.

logic gate

The circuit symbols for the five basic types of logic gate: OR, AND, NOT, NOR, and NAND. The truth table displays the output results of each possible combination of input signal.

plotter

A flatbed plotter, which may be used to produce plans, graphs, and other drawings. The moving arm, holding a pen of the appropriate colour, travels over the surface of the paper.

A system flow chart describes the flow of data through a data-processing system. This chart shows the data flow in a basic accounting system.
