Country flags

Barbados – flag

Blue represents the sea and the sky. The points of the trident represent the three principles of democracy: government of, for, and by the people. Effective date: 30 November 1966.

Iceland – flag

Red symbolizes the fire from Iceland's volcanos. White represents ice. Blue stands for the mountains. Effective date: 19 June 1915.

Lesotho – flag

White stands for peace. The shield and weapons express a willingness to defend the country. Green symbolizes plenty. Blue represents rain. Effective date: 20 January 1987.

State flags

California – flag

Once part of Mexico, the breakaway California Republic adopted this flag in 1846. The star and stripe express the republic's desire to join the Union.

Jersey – flag

This flag is said to have arisen when an 18th-century Dutch book showed a red saltire (diagonal cross) on a white background and captioned it Ierse ('Irish'). An English writer assumed it to be the flag of Jersey and labelled it thus in his book.

Tasmania – flag

The emblem of the island of Tasmania is a red lion, which also appears on the crest of the state arms. The flag was adopted in 1876.
