Eleanor Roosevelt: Human Rights

In this 15th-century painting on the walls of South Leigh church in Oxfordshire, St Michael, with wings and sword raised, weighs a departed soul in the balance. On the left, the Virgin Mary uses rosary beads in an attempt to tip the balance in favour of salvation. On the opposite side, devils with trumpets and pitchforks try to ensure the soul is damned.

Ming dynasty tomb

The Xian Ling tomb, where the Ming emperor Hongxi was buried. The imperial tomb complex, situated 50 km/30 mi northwest of Beijing, is the burial place of 13 of the 16 emperors of the Ming dynasty. Several tombs in the necropolis have been restored, but Xian Ling has not.

Statue at Luxor of Ramses II who ruled Egypt for 66 years in the 13th century BC. Ramses II lived to 90 years of age and fathered more than 170 children. His reign was one of prosperity for the country and was marked by the building of two huge temples at Abu Simbel.
