Science and technology: Sample amazing facts

amphibian

Frogs and toads never eat with their eyes open. When eating, they have to push down with the back of the eyeball in order to force food into the stomach.

Edison, Thomas Alva: light bulb

Thomas Edison's invention of the light bulb did not meet with universal approval. When a British Parliamentary Committee was set up in the late 1870s to investigate its potential value, the report described it as 'good enough for our transatlantic friends... but unworthy of the attention of practical or scientific men'.

fox: litters

Foxes often split a litter between them, with the father taking half the litter and the mother taking the other half, and one parent moving their cubs to a new site. This maximizes the chance of most cubs in the litter surviving.

kangaroo

A fully grown kangaroo can jump 13 m/14 yd. Mathematical calculations have shown that at speeds of over 29 kmph/18 mph, bouncing is a more energy-efficient way of moving for a kangaroo than running would be.

neutron star

Neutron stars are so condensed that a fragment the size of a sugar cube would weigh as much as all the people on Earth put together.

Pasteur, Louis

More germs are transmitted when shaking hands than when kissing. Louis Pasteur, the pioneer of hygienic methods, refused to shake hands with acquaintances for fear of infection.
