I have an Internet connection but am unable to connect to Web sites from the CD

When the CD attempts to connect to Web sites from within the program, it does so by starting your Internet connection. If your Internet Service Provider requires you to enter a password before starting your Internet connection then you must log on before you try to connect to a site. To do this, minimize the CD to your Windows taskbar, start your Internet connection as usual, and then maximize the CD again. Remember to disconnect when you have finished your session.

When I try to run the CD I get a 'CD-ROM Data Not Found' error message

Check that the CD-ROM is correctly inserted in the drive. If it is in the drive and you still get this error message, it is most likely because your CD-ROM drive is not properly set up in Windows. To check this, follow this procedure:

  • Click on Start|Settings|Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the System icon and choose Device Manager.
  • Your screen should look like this:

If you do not have a CD-ROM drive on this list, then your CD-ROM drive, though functioning, has not been properly set up in Windows. It is advisable to speak to your PC vendor about the best way to correctly install this drive.

The CD looks for your CD-ROM drive to be recognised within Windows in order to be able to run, rather than it just being detected by MS-DOS. If your CD-ROM drive is not recognised within Windows then the CD will not be found and you will receive the above message. Some CD-ROMs may need a 32-bit protected mode driver which is compatible with Windows and which will enable your drive to be recognised within Windows. Some or all of the audio clips won't play

You may not be able to hear some of the sounds because your system is not set up with the correct audio codecs that allow you to play these. To install the required audio compression codecs in Windows 95/98, follow the instructions below:

  • Click on Start|Settings|Control Panel.
  • Double-click on the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  • Click on the Settings tab.
  • In the Components list, scroll down to the end of the list and double-click on Multimedia.
  • If the checkbox next to Audio Compression is unchecked, check it. If the check-box is already checked, uncheck it, follow these instructions to the end, and go back to the first step.
  • Click the OK button at the bottom of the window.
  • If prompted for your Windows 95/98 disk/CD, insert the disk or CD, and click OK.
  • The relevant files are now copied onto your system.
  • You may need to restart your computer before these changes take effect.

The audio components (sounds) on the Encyclopedia should now function correctly.

When I try to open a video I receive an error saying 'MMSYSTEM266. The device could not be loaded. Verify the driver is installed correctly'

This error message can occur if certain files are missing or corrupt in your Windows\System folder. See the Microsoft article on how to resolve the problem.

I have a copy of the CD supplied with my Compaq PC but it won't install

Try disabling the anti-virus software and restart the installation of the CD. To disable the anti-virus software, follow these steps:

  • On your taskbar at the bottom of your screen you should see an icon to the right-hand side.
  • Double-click on the icon to open the anti-virus software window.
  • This should appear and will probably have four tabs along the top. On each one you should see a Disable button.
  • Click the Disable button on each tab to disable the software.

Start the installation process for the CD again by either reinserting the CD into the drive and allowing the auto-run to start, or by clicking on Start|Run and entering the install path E:\setup.exe (where E is the letter of your CD-ROM drive) then clicking OK.

The CD may now install successfully. Remember to re-enable the anti-virus software by following the same procedure outlined above.
