Hutchinson Music Reference Suite

Troubleshooter

A 'WP Link' window appears constantly. What is it for and how do I remove it?

The WP Link is a facility that allows you to search for information on some Helicon CD-ROMs without actually opening them from the application icon in the program group. It sits in your in-tray (by your clock on your Windows task bar) and when opened will appear on your desktop as a small window containing a red and a blue book.

If you are, for example, writing a document in a word-processing package, and wish to look up one of the words in the Reference Suite CD-ROM, you could highlight the word in your word-processing document and then click on either the red A–Z book (article head-word search) or the blue book (entire textual content search) icons on the WP Link. Clicking on the red book would search for matching article titles, whilst clicking on the blue book would search for all mentions of your word.

You can select which CD is searched by the WP Link by clicking on the X icon in the top right corner of WP Link, then choosing Options.... Of course, the appropriate CD must be in the drive for the search to work!

If you do not wish the WP Link window to appear in your in-tray:

  • Click on Start|Settings|Task Bar.
  • Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
  • Click the Remove button.
  • Scroll down to the Startup group and click on the small plus sign to its left.
  • Click on the WP Link icon once to highlight it.
  • Click the Remove button and then the Close button

Whenever you want to use the WP Link facility in the future, you can do so by opening it from the Reference Library program group.

Do I need to be connected to the Internet to use the CD?

The Hutchinson Music Reference Suite (HMRS) can be used successfully without Internet connectivity, with the exception of the Web links. You only need to be conncted to the Internet if you wish to use the Web links (links to documents held on the World Wide Web).

HMRS contains some Web links and operates from within a Web browser. A browser is a software application that enables a user to view documents of HTML format and interact with the World Wide Web if they wish to do so. A browser can be used quite independently of the World Wide Web and using a browser does not necessarily mean that you have connected to the Internet. Because HMRS has files written in HTML format, a browser is the ideal interface for the program.

The CD installs but does not automatically load with my browser

If HMRS installs correctly but does not open within your browser by default, try manually opening the HMRS.htm file from your browser (ensuring the CD-ROM is in your CD drive).

Opening with Internet Explorer:

  • If using Windows 98, start Internet Explorer by clicking on the Explorer icon on your desktop.
  • If using Windows 95, click on Start|Programs|Internet Explorer.
  • From the browser window which should have now loaded to your screen, click File|Open – a small Open dialog box will appear on screen.
  • From the Internet Explorer Open window enter the location which contains the HMRS file required to load the program – if you accepted the default installation path, this will be C:\Program Files\Helicon\The Hutchinson Music Reference Suite\HMRS.htm.
  • Click OK, and HMRS should load within the Internet Explorer screen.

Opening with Netscape:

  • Click Start|Programs|Netscape (the browser may be called either Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator). The Netscape browser should now load to your screen.
  • From the Netscape browser click File|Open Page. An Open Page dialog window will appear on the screen.
  • From the Netscape Open Page window enter the location which contains the HMRS file required to load the program – if you accepted the default installation path, this will be C:\Program Files\HMRS\HMRS.htm.
  • Click Open and HMRS should load within Netscape and appear on screen.

If you have not installed HMRS to the default path and cannot remember the location you installed the program to, you can find the HMRS.htm file by performing a search using Windows Explorer:

  • Click on Start|Programs|Windows Explorer.
  • Click once on the My Computer icon at the top of the left-hand pane in the Windows Explorer window.
  • On the menu along the top, click on Tools|Find|Files or Folders....
  • A window appears. Enter the file name HMRS.htm and click Find Now.

Windows Explorer will search your PC for the file and identify the location in which it is held. The In Folder detail is the location you need to enter in the Browser Open window.

When I run the CD I get an error message saying 'entry file not found' followed by messages about script errors

The default installation path of the product is C:\Program Files\Helicon\The Hutchinson Music Reference Suite. You have the option to change the drive to install to if you wish. However, the program can not be run from the top level of the drive – it must be in a folder.

To resolve the problem:

  • Uninstall the program (click on Start|Settings|Programs|Hutchinson Reference|Uninstall Hutchinson Music Reference Suite).
  • Click on Start|Run and type e:setup.exe (where e is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
  • When you are asked where you would like to install the program to, choose the drive you wish, and then type \Helicon after the letter.
  • You will be told that the folder you have chosen is not available, and will be asked whether you wish to create it. Choose yes, and continue with the installation.

The Hutchinson Music Reference Suite should now run as normal.
