Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite

Troubleshooter

I have an Internet connection but am unable to connect to Web sites from the CD

When the Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite (PHRS) attempts to connect to Web Sites from within the program, it does so by starting your Internet connection. If your Internet Service Provider requires you to enter a password before starting your Internet connection then you must log on before you try to connect to a site. To do this, minimize PHRS to your Windows taskbar, start your Internet connection as usual, and then maximize PHRS again. Remember to disconnect when you have finished your session.

Do I need to be connected to the Internet to use the CD?

PHRS can be used successfully without Internet connectivity, with the exception of the Web links. You only need to be conncted to the Internet if you wish to use the Web links (links to documents held on the World Wide Web).

PHRS contains some Web links and operates from within a Web browser. A browser is a software application that enables a user to view documents of HTML format and interact with the World Wide Web if they wish to do so. A browser can be used quite independently of the World Wide Web and using a browser does not necessarily mean that you have connected to the Internet. Because PHRS has files written in HTML format, a browser is the ideal interface for the program.

A 'WP Link' window appears constantly. What is it for and how do I remove it?

The WP Link is a facility that allows you to search for information on some Helicon CD-ROMs without actually opening them from the application icon in the program group. It sits in your in-tray (by your clock on your Windows task bar) and when opened will appear on your desktop as a small window containing a red and a blue book.

If you are, for example, writing a document in a word-processing package, and wish to look up one of the words in the PHRS CD-ROM, you could highlight the word in your word-processing document and then click on either the red A–Z book (article head-word search) or blue book (entire textual content search) icons on the WP Link. Clicking on the red book would search for matching article titles, whilst clicking on the blue book would search for all mentions of your word.

You can select which CD is searched by the WP Link by clicking on the X icon the top right corner of WPLink, then choosing Options.... Of course, the appropriate CD must be in the drive for the search to work!

If you do not wish the WP Link window to appear in your in-tray:

  • Click on Start|Settings|Task Bar.
  • Click on the Start Menu Programs tab.
  • Click on the Remove button.
  • Scroll down to the Startup group and click on the small plus sign to its left.
  • Click on the WP Link icon once to highlight it.
  • Click on the Remove button and then the Close button.

Whenever you want to use the WP Link facility in the future, you can do so by opening it from the Reference Library program group.

The CD installs but does not automatically load with my browser.

If PHRS installs correctly but does not open within your browser by default, try manually opening the PHRS.htm file from your browser (ensuring the CD-ROM is in your CD drive).

Opening with Internet Explorer:

  • If using Windows 98, start Internet Explorer by clicking on the Explorer icon on your desktop.
  • If using Windows 95, click on Start|Programs|Internet Explorer.
  • From the browser window which should have now loaded to your screen, click File|Open – a small Open dialog box will appear on screen.
  • From the Internet Explorer Open window enter the location which contains the PHRS file required to load the program – if you accepted the default installation path, this will be C:\Program Files\Helicon\The Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite\PHRS.htm.
  • Click OK, and PHRS should load within the Internet Explorer screen.

Opening with Netscape:

  • Click Start|Programs|Netscape (the browser may be called either Netscape Navigator or Netscape Communicator). The Netscape browser should now load to your screen.
  • From the Netscape browser click File|Open Page. An Open Page dialog window will appear on the screen.
  • From the Netscape Open Page window enter the location which contains the PHRS file required to load the program – if you accepted the default installation path, this will be C:\Program Files\PHRS\PHRS.htm.
  • Click Open and PHRS should load within Netscape and appear on screen.

If you have not installed PHRS to the default path and cannot remember the location you installed the program to, you can find the PHRS.htm file by performing a search using Windows Explorer:

  • Click on Start|Programs|Windows Explorer.
  • Click once on the My Computer icon at the top of the left-hand pane in the Windows Explorer window.
  • On the menu along the top, click on Tools|Find|Files or Folders....
  • A window appears. Enter the file name PHRS.htm and click Find Now.

Windows Explorer will search your PC for the file and identify the location in which it is held. The In Folder detail is the location you need to enter in the Browser Open window.

When I try to run the CD I get the error message 'Could not load NPIcnFrm32 dynamic link library for the MIME type. Check you have enough memory available to load the plug-in'

Netscape 4.04 requires certain files which are present in later versions of Internet Explorer to be already installed on your system before Netscape can run. If your computer only has Internet Explorer 2 or below, Netscape cannot run, and you will receive two error messages, the first being 'Could not load NPIcnFrm32 dynamic link library for the MIME type. Check you have enough memory available to load the plug-in', followed by 'Could not load tabsheet plug in for the MIME type tabsheet'.

When I try to run the CD I get the JavaScript errors 'Document.NSIconFormXI has no properties' and 'Document.HSActiveFormXI has no properties'

In order to install the plug-ins correctly, your CD-ROM drive has to be able to read long file names. If it can't then when you try to run the program, you will receive error messages about Netscape's failure to load plug-ins. However, you can run an installation program to load them manually from the PHRS CD:

  • Open Windows Explorer (click on Start|Programs|Windows Explorer).
  • Double-click on your CD-ROM's drive letter, and then on the Netscape Plugin folder.
  • Double-click on the application called plugininst.exe. This will run the plug-in installation program.
  • You will need to close and re-start the Netscape application for this to take effect.

Netscape should now have loaded the correct plug-ins and you will be able to run PHRS.

When I run the CD the search box on the left is always empty

Your browser must be correctly set up in order to view the search box. To set up your browser correctly, follow the instructions for the browser you are using.

If you are using Internet Explorer 3, you must enable the ActiveX controls:

  • Go to View|Options and click the Security tab.
  • Ensure that both Enable ActiveX controls and plug-ins and Run ActiveX scripts are checked.
  • Press OK for these new settings to take effect.
  • Close your browser and re-start PHRS.

If you are using Netscape 4 you must enable the Java and JavaScript controls:

  • Go to Edit|Preferences and click the Advanced tab.
  • Ensure that both Enable Java and Enable JavaScript are checked.
  • Press OK for these new settings to take effect.
  • Close your browser and re-start PHRS.

You should now be able to view the search window.

When I run the CD the search box doesn't have a scroll button and I can only view the first ten entries

Your screen display must be set to a standard configuration to enable you to view PHRS fully.

In Windows 95:

  • Close all applications.
  • Right-click on any empty area of your desktop.
  • From the menu that appears, select Properties.
  • In the box that appears, select Settings.
  • Check that your display area is set to 800 × 600, your font size is set to small, and your colour palette is set to High Color (16-bit) or higher.
  • Click Apply and choose Yes to restart your computer.

In Windows 98:

  • Close all applications.
  • Right-click on any empty area of your desktop.
  • From the menu that appears, select Properties.
  • In the box that appears, select Settings.
  • Check that your display area is set to 800 × 600 and your colour palette is set to High Colour (16-bit) or higher.
  • Click the Advanced option.
  • Check that your font size is set to small.
  • Click Apply and choose Yes to restart your computer.

You will now be able to view the search box fully.

If you do not wish to run your screen in small fonts, you can alternatively download a patch. Choose to save it to your desktop, and double-click on it to run it. You should now be able to run PHRS successfully.

When I run the CD I get the error message 'entry file not found d:/data/phrl.ei' followed by messages about script errors

The default installation path of the product is C:\Program Files\Helicon\The Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite. You have the option to change the drive to install to if you wish. However, the program can not be run from the top level of the drive – it must be in a folder.

To resolve the problem:

  • Uninstall the program (click on Start|Settings|Programs|Penguin Hutchinson|Uninstall Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite).
  • Click on Start|Run and type E:setup.exe (where E is the letter of your CD-ROM drive).
  • When you are asked where you would like to install the program to, choose the drive you wish, and then type \Helicon after the letter.
  • You will be told that the folder you have chosen is not available, and will be asked whether you wish to create it. Choose yes, and continue with the installation.

The Penguin Hutchinson Reference Suite should now run as normal.
