I get a 'longpathname error' when I restart the computer
In Windows 95/98:
- Select Start|Shutdown|Restart in MS-DOS mode.
- Type cd C:\windows and press Return.
- Type edit win.ini and press Return.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll down the blue screen that appears until you find a line that reads RUN=LONGPATHNAME.EXE.
- Delete LONGPATHNAME.EXE from this line so that it now reads RUN=.
- Click on File|Save at the top left of the window.
- Click on File|Exit.
- Close the black window by clicking the cross in the top right corner.
- Restart the computer.
- Run the CD as per the instructions.
In Windows 3.x:
- Start your computer in MS-DOS mode.
- Type cd c:\windows and press Return.
- Type edit win.ini and press Return.
- Use the arrow keys to scroll down the blue screen that appears until you find a line that reads RUN=LONGPATHNAME.EXE.
- Delete LONGPATHNAME.EXE from this line so that it now reads RUN=.
- Click on File|Save at the top left of the window.
- Click on File|Exit.
- Type exit and press Return.
- When Windows restars, run the CD as per the instructions.
I get an 'MSVCRT40.dll error' when I try to run the CD
In Windows 95/98:
- Click on Start|Shutdown|Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode.
- Type cd C:\windows\system and press Return.
- Type ren msvcrt40.dll msvcrt40.old and press Return.
- Type exit and press Return.
- When Windows restarts, ignore the error message you get – just click OK.
- Reinstall the CD.
In Windows 3.x:
- Exit Windows.
- Type cd c:\windows\system and press Return.
- Type ren msvcrt40.dll msvcrt40.old and press Return.
- Type win and press Return.
- When Windows restarts, ignore the error message you get – just click OK.
- Reinstall the CD.
'Library Manager' window appears constantly. What is it for, and how do I remove it?
The Library Manager is a facility that allows you to search for information on the CD without actually opening it from the application icon in the program group. It will appear on your desktop as a small window with an A–Z and a magnifying glass.
If you are, for example, writing a document in a word processing package, and wish to look up one of the words on the CD, you could highlight the word in your document then click on either the A–Z (article head-word search) or the magnifying glass (entire textual content search) icon on the Library Manager. Clicking on the A–Z icon would search for matching article titles, while clicking on the magnifying glass icon would search for all mentions of your word.
You can select which CD is searched by the Library Manager by clicking on the X icon in the top right corner of Library Manager, then choosing Options.... Of course, the CD must be in the drive for the search to work!
If you do not wish the Library Manager window to appear on your desktop:
In Windows 95/98:
- Click on Start|Settings|Task Bar.
- Click on the Start Menu Programs tab.
- Click on the Remove button.
- Scroll down to the Startup group and click on the small plus sign to its left.
- Click on the Library Manager icon once to highlight it.
- Click on the Remove button and then the Close button.
Whenever you want to use the Library Manager facility in the future, you can do so by opening it from the Reference Library program group.
In Windows 3.x:
- Maximize the Startup group (it will probably be an icon at the bottom of the main Windows screen if you are running Windows 3.1 or 3.11, so first of all double-click on the icon, then click on the upwards-pointing arrow on the top right of the Startup Group screen).
- Single-click on the Library Manager icon so it is highlighted.
- Click on File|Delete, and choose Yes from the pop-up dialog box.
Whenever you want to use the Library Manager facility in the future, you can do so by opening it from the Reference Library program group.
