Hutchinson Directory of Web Sites

Troubleshooter

I have the CD installed but when I click on a Web link I receive the error message 'HTTP error 403' or 'HTTP error 404'

Errors 403 and 404 are Web browser errors. Error 403 'Forbidden/Access Denied' indicates the Web site you requested requires special access permission – this will be a fault with the host computer as no restricted access sites are included in the Web Directory.

An error 404 'Not Found' indicates that the browser could not find the specific document that you requested on the host computer. To resolve this error, double check the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address against that given in the book; if this is the same, the page may have been removed from the host computer, had its name changed, or have been moved to a new location. This is likely to be an issue with the host computer and not a problem with your own PC or the Web Directory application. Retry the Web link at a later stage to allow for the host computer error to have been corrected and if the problem persists, please report the continued Web link failure to helicon@rm.com.

I have a Mac and I'm having difficulty running the CD

The Web Directory is Mac compatible. If you are having difficulty running it with a Mac system, try the following:

  • Open the Web Directory via your browser.
  • Locate the folder on your system which contains your browser.
  • From the CD-ROM drive locate the start.htm file.
  • Drag this file across to your browser. This should initiate your browser with the start.htm file, thus loading the Web directory to your system and enabling you to view the opening screen and related pages.

I have an Internet connection but am unable to connect to Web sites from the CD

When the Web Directory application attempts to connect to Web sites from within the program, it does so by starting your Internet connection. If your Internet Service Provider requires you to enter a password before starting your Internet connection then you must log on before you try to connect to a site. To do this, minimize the browser containing the Web Directory to your Windows taskbar, start your Internet connection as usual, and then maximize your browser again. Remember to disconnect when you have finished your session.
